Man arrested after chase
SOUTH HADLEY — Police arrested a South Hadley man on a stolen motor vehicle charge and other offenses Aug. 18 after he allegedly attempted to elude police by hiding in the bushes, according to Lt. Steve Parentela.
Carmelito Santiago Jr., 40, of 87 Riverboat Village Road, who was arrested at 7:29 p.m. on Summit Street, pleaded not guilty in Eastern Hampshire District Court Aug. 19 to these charges: receiving a stolen motor vehicle (subsequent offense), failing to stop for police, receiving stolen property over $250 (subsequent offense), possessing burglary tools, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, leaving scene of property damage, resisting arrest, failing to stop for police and operating with a suspended or revoked license (subsequent offense).
Parentela said the incident unfolded after the station received a report from an off-duty officer that a car believed stolen from Pittsfield was spotted near Riverboat Village Road. Officers eventually caught up with the vehicle on Summit Street, where it was parked after having struck a parked truck.
Unable to find the operator, police called in help from the state police K-9 unit, who found Santiago hiding in thick bushes at the end of Summit Street, Parentela said. Santiago was arrested after a brief struggle with police. Santiago is due back in court Sept. 17.
