Amid concerns that ground beef produced at the plant of its meat supplier tested positive for E. coli, the Big Y supermarket chain Thursday recalled two ground sirloin products produced in the same facility.

The Springfield company, which has stores in Northampton, South Hadley, Southampton and Amherst, said the move was voluntary and none of its meat tested positive.

Big Y decided to recall all of its fresh ground sirloin and sirloin steak patties, both labeled 87 percent lean, sold between July 18 and Aug. 1. The recall does not affect any other ground beef items sold at Big Y, the company said.

The company urged customers to check their freezers and refrigerators for this product and return it to Big Y for a full refund.

Big Y’s meat supplier, National Beef Packing Co. of Liberal, Kan., announced the voluntary recall of 50,000 pounds of ground beef products after one 10-pound chub of ground beef tested positive for E. coli.

No reported illnesses are related to the recall, the company said.
