Wednesday morning hydraulic fluid spill closes one lane of Memorial Bridge in South Hadley
SOUTH HADLEY — The northbound lane of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge was closed from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday while the Department of Public Works cleaned up a hydraulic fluid spill, according to South Hadley Police Lt. Steven Parentella.
Parentella said a police officer on patrol noticed the streak of hydraulic fluid around at 9:45 a.m. The leak began on the Holyoke side, and continued all the way across the bridge, he said. The Holyoke Police Department and South Hadley Fire District 1 were notified.
While there were no accidents resulting from the spill, Parentella said approximately five vehicles were splattered with oil.
The DPW spread sand on the road to absorb the oil and make it more passable, he said.
Parentella did not release the name of the driver of the vehicle that caused the spill, but said that it was a dump truck.
There are no charges at this time and the incident remains under investigation.
