Wednesday’s high school baseball: Northampton, South Hadley keep tourney hopes alive

The Northampton and South Hadley baseball teams kept their postseason hopes alive with wins on the road Wednesday.

Both teams now must win games on Friday in order to qualify for the Western Massachusetts Division 1 and Division 2 Tournaments, respectively.

Northampton 9, Belchertown 3 — The Blue Devils (9-10, 5-4 Suburban) plated three runs in three separate innings for the road win.

R.J. Ramsden (three RBIs, two runs) got the scoring started in the fourth with a two-run single. Sam Santiago had an RBI double and a sacrifice fly. Zack Goodwin-Boyd (two runs), Mack Hale, Robbie Logue and Jay Wright each added an RBI, while Ben Christopher scored two runs.

Freshman Hunter Salem went 51∕3 innings to pick up the win. He allowed two earned runs on five hits with one strikeout. Joe Warner came on in relief and escaped a two-on, one-out jam.

Hamp must win at Ludlow Friday at 4 p.m. to earn a spot in the WMass Division 1 tourney.

Jake Mastorakis went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Orioles (4-15, 1-8), who have already secured a D-2 berth. Tom Daley knocked in a pair on one hit.

South Hadley 7, Palmer 5 (9) — After allowing three runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extras, the Tigers (5-14) responded with a pair in the ninth to claim the must-win road contest.

Joe Ciolek allowed seven hits and struck out eight in a complete-game victory. He also tripled twice and drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Pat Sears had two hits and drove in a pair, while Nate Flachs added a hit and an RBI.

South Hadley, the defending state champs, can qualify for the WMass D-2 tourney with a win Friday at Belchertown at 4 p.m.

Gateway Regional 18, Sci-Tech 2 — Ethan Gamble (double, triple) scored five runs to help the Gators (10-9, 7-7 Bi-County) earn their spot in the postseason with the road win.

Jonathan Haskell also doubled and tripled, while Nate Croke had one hit and two RBIs.

James DeGray earned the win on the mound.
