Thursday’s high schools: Tim Knightly hurls no-hitter for Hopkins Academy

Hopkins Academy pitcher Tim Knightly recovered from his first pitch quite nicely on Thursday afternoon.

After hitting the Pioneer Regional leadoff batter on his initial delivery of the game, the senior right-hander proceeded to throw his first no-hitter with 11 strikeouts as the Golden Hawks won 7-0 in Hadley.

Only two men reached base for Pioneer, the other on a seventh-inning error. Knightly faced just one over the minimum because of the runner caught stealing in the first.

“Tim threw his curve really well, and his biggest goal was not to walk anyone,” Hopkins coach Jordan Branson said. “He had been pitching well all year so far, but he’d scatter in some walks in all his outings. So he wanted to throw more strikes, and clearly he threw quality ones. He got a lot of strikeouts, and when they did put the ball in play, it was mainly ground balls that our defense made plays on.”

Knightly’s battery mate Sean Quill launched a pair of solo home runs for Hopkins (3-6, 2-4 Hampshire).

Evan Delaney went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Ethan Wenner had a two-run double and scored a run, while Brett Morrison and Knightly (two runs) both added RBI doubles.

Center fielder Greg Hannum made a nice over-the-shoulder catch in the fifth inning to preserve the no-hitter.

“Our last three losses were all by one run, so we talked about some things to get on the other side of those close games,” Branson said. “We played up to our standards (Thursday), and it certainly all starts on the mound with Tim’s performance.”

Longmeadow 4, Belchertown 3 (11) — A leadoff walk and two-out error scored the winning run as the Lancers (3-6) beat former coach John Mayo and the Orioles (2-8). Mayo coached Longmeadow the previous 16 years.

Tom Daley struck out four and walked two over 10 innings before giving way to Bryan Perlak for Belchertown.

Nick Leduc made a diving catch in right-center and doubled off a runner at second to end the seventh and force extra innings.

James Ryan and Daley each had two hits in the loss.

Frontier Regional 5, Mohawk Regional 3 — Sam Tillona (six strikeouts) allowed just one earned run on two hits over four innings as the Red Hawks (5-2, 4-1 Hampshire) won in Buckland.

Tillona helped his own cause with a hit, an RBI and a run scored. Sean Doyle (two RBIs) and Niko Ames (run) both went 2-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases.

Sabis 16, Smith Voke 1 (5) — Jake Wilson doubled, moved to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on passed ball in the third inning but the Vikings (0-7, 0-5 Tri-County South) fell in Springfield.

Agawam 4, Northampton 3 (14) — The Brownies and the Blue Devils picked up where they left off on April 10, tied 3-3 in the 13, and it was Paige Circosta’s homer in the 14th inning that gave Agawam the win.

Mary Greco, Maya Kerstetter and Rachel Sheehan each had three hits for Hamp (7-2).

Frank Zumbo, who plays baseball at Williston Northampton, was misidentified in Thursday’s prep report.
