Tuesday’s colleges: UMass softball outslugs UConn
The University of Massachusetts came out on the winning end of a slugfest Tuesday, edging Connecticut 7-6 at Sortino Field.
Trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth, Quianna Diaz-Patterson belted a two-run double to left to give UMass the lead. UConn got the first two runners on in the seventh, but Caroline Raymond got a foul out, a fly out and strike out to get out of trouble.
Raymond struck out seven, walked four and allowed five hits, including three home runs.
Katie Bettencourt added a two-run home run for UMass (13-17), which has won six straight and 11 out of 12.
Smith College 3, Western New England 2 (9); Western New England 10, Smith College 8 — Gina Martucci struck out five and walked one in the complete-game victory in Game 1 for the Pioneers.
Caroline Kushner went 3-for-4 with three runs, while Martucci had two hits and five RBIs in the Game 2 loss for Smith (7-19).
UMass 9, Central Connecticut 5 — The Minutemen scored once in the seventh and three times in the eight to pull away from the Blue Devils at home.
Dylan Begin had a three-run triple in the eighth as part of a three hit, three-RBI performance.
UMass had 17 hits in the game. Rich Graef (four hits, two runs), Ryan Cusick (three hits, run), Adam Picard (two hits, RBI) and Nik Campero (two hits, three runs) all joined Begin in the multiple-hit club for the Minutemen (8-17).
Amherst 17, Skidmore 5 — Priscilla Tyler and Meghan Mills each had three goals as the Lord Jeffs (8-4) won at home.
Mount Holyoke 17, Smith College 6 — Julia Bell had six goals as the Lyons (10-3, 2-2 NEWMAC) won on the road.
Kate Detrick had five goals for the Pioneers (3-11, 0-5).
Connecticut College 8, Amherst 7 — Dylan Park, Jeff Izzo and Devin Acton each had two goals but the Lord Jeffs (4-8, 2-6 NESCAC) fell at home.
