South Hadley seeks volunteers for golf course board
SOUTH HADLEY - The Select Board is looking for candidates for vacancies on the Municipal Golf Commission.
The town-owned Ledges was purchased from James River Corp. in 1997 and developed as a golf course through a state Urban Self-Help Grant. The Select Board set a goal of running the course as a self-sustaining operation without taxpayer subsidies when it opened in 2001, but golf revenues have only exceeded operating expenses twice, in 2009 and 2010.
The economic downtown, and related slump in golfing across the state, caused the board to explore options for future management of the course, including hiring an outside vendor to take over golf course operations.
However, the town has recently experienced success operating the course in-house with General Manager Doug Juhasz, and is currently hiring a food and beverage manager to handle on-site concessions.
The seven Golf Commission members and two associate members oversee general operations, policies, capital purchases, finances and overall management. The board also promotes golfing programs and other recreation activities. There are presently openings for one regular and two associate members.
Volunteers can fill out an online application on the Select Board page of the town’s website at www.southhadleyma.gov or send a letter to the board at 116 Main St., South Hadley, 01075, or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Letters will be accepted until all positions are filled.
Learning about the town
A program, “What’s New in South Hadley,” will be presented by the South Hadley and Granby Chamber of Commerce March 19, in partnership with Loomis Village. The event will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Loomis Village, 20 Bayon Drive.
Presentations will be made by the Discovery Center, South Hadley Youth Commission, South Hadley Falls Fest, arts organization Creativity Days, and Loomis Communities, residences for older adults. Chamber President Steve Markow will also introduce David Scruggs, new president and CEO of Loomis Communities.

Casino trip planned
The chamber will also sponsor a bus trip to Mohegan Sun April 7 to benefit the scholarship fund for Granby and South Hadley high school seniors and the Granby Council on Aging.
Price is $25 per person, payable at time of reservation. Checks should be made out to the chamber. Coupons worth $15 towards food in casino restaurants and $15 in bets on the Big 6 Wheel are included.

A free workshop on creating walkable town centers, including some recommendations made by the South Hadley Sustainable Design Assessment Team in its review of conditions in South Hadley Falls, will be co-sponsored by the Hampshire Council of Governments March 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Collaborative for Educational Services, 97 Hawley St., Northampton.

The South Hadley Falls Neighborhood Association seeks volunteers to help restore landscaping in a lot next to the Crack of Dawn restaurant at the corner of Bridge and Main streets. Nomination papers ready
Nomination papers for the April 29 district election are now available. Nomination papers may be requested at Fire District No. 1 Firehouse, District Clerk’s office, 144 Newton St., Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The deadline to return papers to the District Clerk is March 11. The following elected offices will be on the April 29 ballot: Moderator, one year; Prudential Committee, three years; Water Commission, three years.
