Thursday’s high schools: Northampton girls cruise to road win over Holyoke

The Northampton girls basketball team made a statement Thursday with a 49-29 road win over defending Division 1 sectional champ Holyoke.

The Blue Devils avenged a 52-41 loss to the Purple Knights on Dec. 11 in their second game of the season.

“They were very disappointed in that effort,” Hamp coach Perry Messer said. “We watched that tape and it showed our body language and how timid we were. From the get-go (Thursday), we came out and set the tone on how we wanted to play. We attacked from start to finish.”

Anna Walther had 17 points and six assists, while Charlotte Maurer had four points, seven steals and nine rebounds. Maurer held Holyoke star Kirsy Segarra to 12 points, with no field goals in the second half. Segarra had 27 as the Purple Knights rallied to beat West Springfield Wednesday.

“They were down 19 and came back against West Springfield,” Messer said. “We knew (a 15 point halftime lead) was nothing. We made sure we came out and were aggressive.”

Anna Moore had 12 points, Maya Kerstetter added 11 points and Maggie Mahoney had 10 rebounds off the bench in the win.
