Frontier Cal Ripken 9-and-under reaches state final; Northampton’s run ends in semis

The Frontier and Northampton 9-and-under Cal Ripken teams both won their respective groups in pool play at the state tournament in Hinsdale over the weekend.

While Frontier’s 3-1 record in Pool A meant an automatic berth in Monday’s state title game, Northampton’s 3-0 Pool B performance meant a semifinal game against Northbridge on Sunday afternoon.

Northampton fell to Northbridge 8-6 in the semifinals after rallies in the fifth and sixth innings camp up short.

Frontier and Northbridge square off Monday at 5:30 at Hinsdale for the championship.

After defeating Sutton 12-11 on Friday, Northampton defeated Narragansett (12-7) Saturday and Marlboro (18-8) advance from pool play.

Dallas Elliott went 10-16 (.625) in the tournament with two home runs and seven RBIs. Soren Fischer was 7-for-12 (.583), while Alex Houck was 6-for-15 (.400) with eight runs scored.

Frontier, meanwhile, bounced back from Friday’s 9-3 loss to Williamstown to defeat Hudson (14-13) and Pepperell (17-2) on Saturday. Frontier then knocked off Douglas (10-2) on Sunday to advance to the finals.

Ben Zaranek had seven hits, including a triple and two doubles, and seven RBIs in the three weekend games, while Patrick Boyden (five RBIs) and Max Edwards (four RBIs) added six hits each. Kevin Baumann had five hits and two RBIs.

Kyle Barnes, Patrick Boyden and and Zaranek were the winning pitchers.
