Gush Valenta 5K to be held May 5

The second annual Gush Valenta 5K Memorial will be held May 5 at 10 a.m. at the Northampton Elks Club in Florence.

The event is a fundraiser in honor the late Agnes “Gush” Valenta. Proceeds will benefit the Florence Recreation Fields Project located on Meadow Street, where new multi-purpose and baseball fields, as well as a playground, will be built.

The event is open to all ages and will also feature a fun walk.

Dr. Shari Walker, a Northampton native and the chair of the Sports Management Department at Western New England University, is the guest speaker.

Day of race registration begins at 10 a.m. at the Northampton Elks Club.

Northampton tennis league seeks players

The Northampton Recreation Department is now accepting registrations for its spring/summer adult tennis league.

The league is for players of all levels who want to compete in singles. Players are placed in divisions based on ability and play a schedule of 9 to 12 matches, one per week, throughout the summer. New players are encouraged to attend a jamboree on May 5 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at JFK Middle School.

Self-defense seminar to be held at S. Deerfield

Thomas Norwood, owner of ATA Martial Arts, will conduct a self-defense seminar on May 1 and May 8 from 7-8:30 p.m. at 3 Elm Street, South Deerfield.

Norwood will teach the Krav Maga technique, which is based on the body’s natural instincts, not elaborate movements.
