SOUTHAMPTON — Though she has led the First Congregational Church of Southampton for nearly three months, the Rev. Jennie Valentine says she’s still making a big effort to meet people. “When a new pastor comes in, the first year is about getting to know the community, getting to know the culture, beginning to understand the mechanisms and what psychologists call the family systems that operate within any community,” Valentine said in a recent interview. “I’m trying to meet with every person connected with the faith community one-on-one.” Valentine in September became the pastor of the church at 212 College Highway, which had been without a permanent pastor for over two years.
