RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER Route 9, Belchertown Photograph and text by Anne E. Ely of South Hadley With a flat tray feeder most birds usually dive right in, hopping around and picking out the choicest morsels. But not the red-bellied woodpeckers. They liked to hook their toes over the edge of the tray and cling there while feeding. This one has come up with a sunflower seed. I have enough trouble shucking sunflower seeds with my teeth and two hands. I don’t know how these guys manage with just a bill.
