DOWN THE HATCH

Pondside Road, Longmeadow

Photograph and text by Pedge Daniels of Longmeadow

I’d been away from the Pioneer Valley for a while, and was touching base with one of my favorite birding haunts, Pondside Road in Longmeadow. While my attention was directed elsewhere, I heard a sound in the water behind me, and turned around just in time to see this cormorant surface with its catch. In the blink of an eye, this large fish went down the cormorant’s hatch ... without a hitch. I never cease to be surprised by those clear blue eyes. The image was created with a point-and-capture digital camera on a telephoto setting.

Pedge Danels is affiliated with the Robert Floyd Photo Gallery, 2 East St., Southampton. Oher nature images are on view there Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m.
