Hampshire Regional to host walk to raise awareness, funds to fight diabetes
WESTHAMPTON — A Hampshire Regional High School freshman whose father died of complications from diabetes four years ago is asking the public to join her in a walk to raise awareness and funds to fight the disease.
Clara Thatcher, 14, has organized the Charles’ Angels Walk for Diabetes Education on Saturday in memory of her father. She hopes the event will raise $1,500 for the Cooley Dickinson Center for Excellence in Diabetes Education in Northampton.
“I’m hoping to make it an annual event,” Thatcher said Thursday.
She said that at least 60 people are planning to attend, but she hopes more will come to walk.
Though walkers are encouraged to make donations themselves or get sponsors, anyone can come even if they can’t pay, Thatcher said. For every $25 a participant raises, they will be entered into a drawing for a Kindle Fire tablet, and there will be other prizes and raffles.
Anyone interested can register at the event or online at www.charlesangels.weebly.com to start collecting donations.
The event takes place at the high school at 19 Stage Road in Westhampton from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday. Donations to CEDE can be sent to Thatcher, payable to CDHCC, c/o Charles’ Angels Walk, P.O. Box 165, Worthington, MA 01098.
