RAINBOW MORNING

Mount Pollux, Middle Street, Amherst

Photograph and text by Karen Lemoine of Amherst

By mid-April last year, spring buds were beginning to show lots of color, so I decided to hike to Mount Pollux to capture the beautiful morning light as it fell across the Holyoke Range. On the way there it began to sprinkle, and the sprinkles turned to light rain. I started to question the wisdom of this hike. The clouds were close to obscuring the rising sun, and that decided me — it was time to turn around to go home.

But when I turned around, this gorgeous rainbow presented itself to me. The words of more experienced photographers came immediately to mind: Always turn around. Look behind you to find out the entirety of what that place has to offer you.

This image was captured with a DSLR camera with a wide- angle lens.
