Thursday’s high schools: Smith Academy beats Turners Falls in overtime

Katie Yagodzinski matched a career-high with 16 points as the Smith Academy girls basketball team handed former coach Ted Wilcox’s Turners Falls squad a 36-34 overtime loss in his first game back at Sherry A. Webb Gymnasium.

Wilcox guided the Falcons for four years before taking over the job in his hometown.

Emiko Barker had six points and Ashley Higgins added five for the Falcons (4-14, 3-13 Franklin South), who trailed by 16 at halftime.

Granby 65, Holyoke Catholic 23 — Kiley Baran had a game-high 14 points, while Briannah Mercier had 11 points and Melissa L’Heureux a career-high 10 as the Rams (15-2) won at home.

Meghan Sullivan had seven steals, while Rebecca Sapoukey had nine points, 10 rebounds and two blocks.

Lilli Klejna had six points for the Gaels (6-10).

South Hadley 65, Ware 58 — Kelly Pouliot scored a career-high 23 points and Kara Callahan added 16 as the Tigers (13-4, 3-3 Bi-County Central) won on the road.

New Leadership 62, Smith Vocational 26 — Zuleika Ortiz and Miranda Clark each had six points but the Vikings (4-13, 4-12 Tri-County) fell in Springfield.

Madeline Spencer-Orrell had 12 rebounds in the loss.

Athol 50, Frontier Regional 25 — The Red Hawks (9-8, 9-7 Franklin South) trailed 14-11 after the first quarter but couldn’t stay with the Red Raiders (18-0, 16-0 North) in South Deerfield.

Amanda Calvo had 10 points for Frontier, which shot 10 for 52 from the field.

Agawam 54, Amherst Regional 35 — Xin Xin Tarren had 11 points but the Hurricanes (3-13, 2-4 Suburban) fell at home.

Hockey

Easthampton 4, Amherst Regional 0 — Matt Sarafin earned a 29-save shutout as the Eagles (6-3-5, 3-2 Fay) moved within one point of qualifying for the tournament with the win at Orr Rink.

Zach Lewis, Tim Pfau and Mike Grise had a goal and an assist apiece for Easthampton, while Andrew Fleming added a tally. Jacob Opalanek picked up a pair of assists, with David York and David Kuhr assisting once each.

Easthampton hosts Agawam (11-3-2) Wednesday at 9 p.m. The Brownies beat the Eagles 8-2 in each team’s season opener Dec. 8.

Eddie Sablak made 38 saves for the Hurricanes (3-9-3, 0-3-1).

Cathedral 2, Boston College High 2 — John Leonard of Amherst had an assist for the Panthers (13-0-3), who remained unbeaten after tying it up in the third period on the road.
