PILEATED WOODPECKER

Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary, Coombs Road, Easthampton

Photograph and text by Bette Robo of Worcester

My first walk through Arcadia was in May, during a photo workshop field trip. The instructor led us to one of his favorite spots, and we stopped, waited and listened. We were rewarded with a whacking sound that only a pileated woodpecker can create.

We spotted it feeding from a cavity in a nearby dead tree. These are large, crow-sized birds. I slowly walked closer, raising my DSLR camera and telephoto zoom lens. I stayed a safe distance away so as not to intrude on its space. It was delightful to closely observe this magnificent bird.

Bette Robo is affiliated with the Robert Floyd Photo Gallery, 2 East St., Southampton. Other images are on view there Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m.
