Wednesday’s high schools: Frontier girls volleyball unbeaten heading into critical stretch

The Frontier Regional girls volleyball team is rolling into the toughest part of its regular season schedule.

Sarah Woodward had 14 kills on 17 swings as the Red Hawks stayed unbeaten with a 3-0 victory over Turners Falls at home Wednesday.

Emily Woodward added 26 assists, while Remi Quesnelle chipped in with five kills for Frontier (6-0) in the 25-13, 25-11, 25-20 win

The three-time Division 3 state champions enter a tough stretch of games, starting with six-time Division 2 sectional champion Longmeadow, Friday in South Deerfield. Agawam (Monday), Medfield (Tuesday) and Amherst (Sept. 30) follow.

“We’re about where we should be,” Frontier coach Sean MacDonald said. “The schedule is going to get tougher from here. We haven’t played any of our league matches and I set up some brutal nonleague matches.”

Amherst 3, Agawam 0 — Ali Ziomek had six kills and four digs as the Hurricanes (6-0, 1-0 Eastern) won 25-16, 15-18, 25-12.

Justine Bohl had 20 assists, while Grace Frank (five digs, two aces) and Julia Fay (five blocks, three kills) also performed well for Amherst.

Ware 3, Easthampton 0 — The Eagles (2-5) lost on the road, 25-21, 25-8, 25-10.

Jordan Burt had two kills and two digs for Easthampton. Stephanie Kubasek had three digs and a kill, while Caelin Mottor added three aces.

South Hadley 3, Dean Tech 1 — The Tigers (3-3) rode strong serving in the home victory, 25-7, 25-4, 19-25, 25-12.

Courtney Guertin (five aces) had 19 service points and no errors, while Sarah LaRochelle also had five aces.

Mohawk Trail 3, Smith Vocational 0 — Emily Laroche served well, Bailey Richardson played well at setter, and both players made timely defensively plays for the Vikings (0-3), who fell 25-19, 25-11, 25-10.

Boys soccer

Smith Academy 4, Granby 1 — Derek McMahon (assist) and Harry Kennedy each had two goals as the Falcons (2-1-2) rolled at home.

Quinn Rickert, Jack Dadmun and Kevin Banas each had one assist, while Cameron Woodward made six saves.

Ryan Bachand scored from Devin Bergeron, while Brett Sullivan made four saves for the Rams (1-4-1).

Athol 1, Hopkins Academy 0 — The Red Raiders scored on a direct kick from 19 yards out late in the second half for the lone goal in Athol.

Ben Pitta made three saves for the Golden Hawks (5-1, 3-1 Schmid).

Holyoke Catholic 2, Putnam Vocational 1 — Ryan Lukomski scored two first-half goals for the Gaels (2-3-1, 0-2 McGrath South).

John O’Hara and Christiano Marconi assisted on Lukomski’s goals.

Tom Heavren had eight saves for the Gaels.

Smith Vocational 1, Pioneer Christian 1 — Tomaz Oliveira converted a feed from Garrett Wright for the Vikings (0-2-1) in the road draw.

Will Ingram made four saves for Smith Voke.

Renaissance 2, Gateway Regional 0 — Mike Arel made seven saves but the Gators (2-2-1) dropped one at home.

Sabis 3, Frontier Regional 0 — The Red Hawks (3-2, 3-2 Schmid) gave up three tallies in the second half in the road loss.

Dylan Husted made five saves for Frontier.

Field hockey

Northampton 4, Westfield 0 — Emily Allcroft scored twice, both off assists by Emily Poehlein, as the Blue Devils (5-0) remained undefeated with the win at home.

Kerry Fleming and Reilly Griffin put Northampton in control early with one unassisted goal each.

Dana Dufour made five saves for the shutout.

Holyoke 2, South Hadley 1 — Jackie Doyle scored late in the first half to tie it, but the Tiger (3-3) allowed the only second-half tally in the road loss.

Ali Rondeau picked up an assist for South Hadley, and Sam Brault made seven saves in net.

Girls soccer

Gateway 4, St. Mary’s 0 — Kendall Rooney had two goals for the Gators (3-0-2, 0-0-1, Pioneer South) in the win.

Jessie Walton and Alyssa Moreau both added tallies, while Charlotte LeBarron (two assists), Chelsi Derrig (two assists) and Ali Fisk (one assist) also played well for Gateway.

Holyoke Catholic 11, Commerce 0 — Alliana Hasiuk’s hat trick spearheaded the attack for the Gaels (1-1-2), who gave coach Mallary Blair her first win.

Megan Goncalves scored twice for Catholic. Kyra Robins (assist), Lexi Neffinger, Adelina Martins, Maddi Aponte, Mary Roberge and Katie Klejna added a tally apiece.

Alexis Carrington had two assists, with Anna DeSimone and Kylee Windyka assisting once each.

Central 2, Amherst Regional 1 — On Monday, Sage DeChiara had the lone goal for the Hurricanes (0-2-1) in the loss on the road.

Hattie Wilder-Karlstrom assisted on the goal, while Becca Carkhuff stopped five shots in net for Amherst.

In a 1-0 loss to Hampshire last week, Carkhuff made 17 saves for the Hurricanes. The name of Amherst’s goalie was incorrectly reported to the Gazette.
