Friday’s high schools: Belchertown girls tennis qualifies for postseason

The Belchertown girls tennis first doubles team of Morgan O’Connor and Angela Grabazs won a pair of tiebreakers as the Orioles upset Palmer 3-2 at Ludlow Tennis Club on Friday and qualified for the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Tournament.

O’Connor and Grabazs defeated Laura Thompkins & Jeralyn Halstead of Palmer 7-6, 7-6.

No. 1 Rachel Gustafson and No. 3 Julian Tan both won their singles matches for Belchertown (9-9).

Boys lacrosse

Minnechaug 7, South Hadley 6 — Evan Marcus’ four goals and two assists weren’t enough for the Tigers (15-6, 8-5 Valley Wheel) at home.

Tom Dowd and Tom Crotty contributed one goal each for the Tigers, with goalie Justin Pontz recording 10 saves.

East Longmeadow 16, Belchertown 4 — Jordan Auffrey scored twice for the Orioles (8-12) on the road.

Jason Krasinkiewicz and Aaron Krasinkiewicz added one goal each, while Travis Greeley made 13 saves.

Girls lacrosse

Amherst Regional 14, Holyoke Catholic 6 — Taylor Bartmon tallied seven goals and two assists as the Hurricanes (6-14) rolled at Chicopee High School.

Sarah Mangels (two assists) had a hat trick with Leah Goldman (four assists) and Eliza Fishman contributing two goals each for Amherst.

The win marked the final game for Amherst seniors Addison Gamliel, Fishman, Mangels and Goldman.

Lexi Neffinger (assist), Lauren Kennedy, Taylor Leclair, Jess Cavanaugh, Lidia Hojnoski and Elizabeth Cavanaugh scored once each for the Gaels (6-12).

Goalie Katie Klejna had 22 saves in the loss.

The loss was the final game for Kennedy, the lone senior on the Catholic squad.

Longmeadow 19, Northampton 2 — Kerry Fleming and Emma Biggs scored the goals for the Blue Devils (9-9) on the road.

Dana Dufour made two saves.

Belcertown 13, Westfield 10 — Emma Jopson had five goals as the Orioles (15-4-1, 10-1-1 Valley League) clinched the league title with a win at home.

Natalie Caney had a hat trick for Belchertown, while Breana Allen and Jackie Soucia added two.

Katarina Lowe scored once, while Kayla Panek was credited with four assists. Kate Bowers had two assists.

Abbey Norden recorded 10 saves in net.
