Amherst Regional sophomore Taj-Amir Torres second in New England in 55-meter dash
In a field full of the region’s top track stars, Amherst Regional’s Taj-Amir Torres ran the second-fastest 55-meter dash at the New England Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The sophomore finished with a time of 6.45 seconds at Saturday’s meet at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
Torres missed first by three-hundreths of a second. Harold Cooper Jr. of Hillhouse, Conn. placed first (6.42).
“I felt really good out of the block,” Torres said of the final. “I ran my best time and came in second. First is always the best but I was happy with my performance.”
Torres moves on to New Balance Indoor Nationals this Friday at the Armory Track in New York City.
“I’m not holding anything back at Nationals,” Torres said. “I’m going to try to get the fastest times I’ve ever had.”
Torres won the 55 at both the PVIAC and Division 2 championships before a third-place finish at All-States.
“I felt like I needed to come to New Englands and redeem myself,” Torres said of the All-States performance. “I felt like I did.”
Torres vowed a return to New Englands next year with a different ending.
“I’ll be back next year. I’ll try my best to improve and get first place.”
