Monday’s high schools: Tyler Peake hits game-winning 3 at buzzer for Amherst Regional

The Amherst Regional boys basketball team had a chance to win the game inside. Instead, the Hurricanes opted for a longer shot.

Reed Bixby had the ball in the paint, but kicked it out to Tyler Peake, who drilled a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift Amherst to a 48-46 win over Westfield in Amherst Monday.

With 10 seconds left, a jumpball situation gave the Hurricanes the possession along the sidelines. Trailing by one, Tom Cook found Bixby inside, but the 6-foot, 6-inch center was defended by 6-8 D.J. Florek, who recorded 10 blocks in a win over Cathedral Saturday. Cook kicked out to Peake, who nailed his second 3 of the game.

Noris Cuevas-Nova had 13 points and 15 rebounds for Amherst (13-5, 3-3 Suburban).

Mahar Regional 48, Easthampton 45 — Brandon Woodard’s 3-pointer with 18 seconds left broke a 45-45 tie and the Eagles’ hearts as the loss knocked Easthampton (9-11, 7-11 Hampshire League) out of postseason contention.

Dakota Wheeler had 15 points on five 3-pointers to lead the Eagles, who honored Jeremy Hughes, Kenny Lumpkin and Chris Starcun (eight points) as part of senior night.

Starcun, who averages 23.2 points per game, was held to single digits for the first time this season.

St. Mary 56, Gateway 39 — Calvin Dowers and Ryan Fisk each scored 10 points as the Gators (2-18) finished out their season with a home loss.

Gateway kept the game close through the first two quarters, entering halftime down six, but was outscored 24-13 in the second half.

Ware 62, Holyoke Catholic 48 — Akhil Patel (16 points) and Jeff Laprade (12 points) played well but could not help the Gaels (0-18, 0-7 Bi-County South) notch their first win of the season.

Girls basketball

Holyoke Catholic 38, Sci-Tech 35 — Kyra Robins scored with less than a minute left to give the Gaels (8-11, 3-5 Bi-County West) the lead, and Katie Klejna padded it with a pair of free throws in the comeback win in Chicopee.

Robins led all scorers with 14 points, while Julia Hiney added nine points for Catholic, which overcame a two-point first quarter.

Frontier 39, Smith Academy 15 — Amanda Calvo scored eight points and Sydney Judge recorded 10 steals to lead the Red Hawks (11-9, 11-7 Franklin South) to the home win. Freshman Ashley Higgins (14) scored all but one of the Falcons’ (4-16, 3-15 Franklin South) points.

Ludlow 47, Northampton 27 — Anna Walther scored 11 points as the Blue Devils (16-4, 9-3 Valley Wheel) failed to clinch sole possession of the league title at home.

Down by five points after three quarters, Northampton was outscored 20-6 by the Lions in the final quarter.

Mahar 48, Easthampton 35 — Kristen Windoloski scored 12 points for the Eagles (16-4, 14-4 Franklin South) in the road loss.

Elizabeth Whitney recorded a double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

Hopkins 50, Athol 45 — Led by a strong defensive effort and the excellent play of Olivia Mathieu (15 points) and twins Mackenzie (16 points) and Kate Sullivan (13 points), the Golden Hawks (12-8, 12-6 Franklin South) pulled off an upset, handing the Red Raiders (19-1, 17-1 Franklin North) their first loss of the season in their final regular season game.

Chicopee 62, Amherst Regional 48 — Sarah Mangels had 12 points and Elena Valenzuela-Stookey added 11 but the Hurricanes (3-15, 2-6 Suburban).

Gateway Regional 24, Dean Tech 8 — Chelsi Derrig had six points and Kaitlin Mastello five as the Gators (14-3, 13-1 Tri-County) rolled on the road.

Hockey

Turners Falls 3, Amherst Regional 2 — Frontier student Brandon Bryant made 18 saves to earn the win in goal as the Indians (8-8-2) took a big step toward qualifying for the tournament.

Tim Atkins, Brandon Lenois and Zach Demars scored for Turners, which needs two points over its final two games to earn a spot. Trevor Peduzzi assisted twice, with Jordan Cutting and Cullen Wozniak picking up an assist apiece.

Matt Gazaille and Jack Rees scored once each for the Hurricanes (3-12-3), while Luke Allen and Jason Sloat each had one assist. Eddie Sablak stopped 38 shots in the loss.
