Blue Devils, Falcons win at Classic

The local teams enjoyed their Saturday afternoon games at the Jill E. Harrington Hanzalik Basketball Classic at Northampton High.

The Smith Academy and Northampton boys earned wins in the second and final day of the Classic, with the Falcons topping Taconic 58-56 followed by the Blue Devils knocking off Westfield 61-55.

Smith Academy 58, Taconic 56 — Keith Natale and Seaver Rickert each posted double-doubles as the Falcons (4-1) held off the Braves (1-4).

Mat Sulda scored a team-high 18 points.

Natale finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks, while Rickert had 11 points, 16 rebounds, two steals and three blocks.

David Longstreeth added seven points and six assists, while Derek McMahon contributed five points and six steals.

Northampton 61, Westfield 55 — Jake Ross and Justin Burgos combined for 31 points for the Blue Devils (4-1).

Aidan Hirsch added 11 for Northampton, which made 10 3-pointers to help overcome a 25-point performance by Westfield’s Devin Wells.

Wahconah 37, Frontier Regional 36 — Peter Watroba’s free throw with 30 seconds left gave the Red Hawks (3-3) a 36-34 lead, but the Warriors won it when Collin Parrott made a deep 3-pointer off the glass at the buzzer in Dalton.

Watroba led all scorers with 18 points.

Hockey

Amherst Regional 3, Greenfield 1 — Joshua Lacroix, Sam Lincoln and Luke Allen each scored a goal for the Hurricanes (2-4-2) in the Rabbitt Graves consolation game in Greenfield Saturday.

Matthew Gazaille and Ben Jackson were each credited with an assist, while Eddy Sablak made 41 saves.

The tournament title game between Turners Falls and Wahconah was postponed to Monday at noon.

Wrestling

Northampton went 2-2 at the Eagle Quad tournament hosted by Franklin Tech in Turners Falls Saturday.

The Blue Devils defeated Athol 48-27 and Gateway 42-36. They fell to Dean Tech 41-36 and Sabis 40-34.

Dean Scheinost (145 pounds), Kyle Cote-Houghton (152) and Ben O’Conner (195) each went 4-0 on the day. O’Conner had three pins, while Scheinost and Cote-Houghton had two each.

John Grimaldi (220) and Nick Day (285) went 3-1 with two pins apiece.
