Grant geared to senior citizen outreach nixed

Amherst will not pursue a competitive grant that could have funded more outreach to Pelham senior citizens, such as home visits and frequent distribution of a newsletter.

Officials at the Amherst Senior Center had been working on a Community Innovation Challenge Grant application that would have put the towns in a partnership to give the more than 300 Pelham residents who are 60 and over a greater number of services.

“Our perspective is there are a lot of needs there not being met,” said Maura Plante, an Amherst social worker. Pelham officials, however, want to formally evaluate the needs of the town’s senior citizens and determine whether it would have the money to continue funding the expanded services, she said.

Plante said she and assistant social worker Helen MacMellon will be talking to Highland Valley Elder Services to determine how to proceed. “It’s disappointing after a lot of time and money was put into (studying) it,” Plante said.
