Weekend Planner — Art
Following a juried selection process, 10 artists will take to the sidewalks of downtown Northampton on Friday to compete in the city’s 4th Annual Chalk Art Festival. The event runs 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the awarding of cash prizes for the top three creations set for 5 on the steps of Northampton City Hall. The event coincides with the monthly Northampton Arts Night Out, which has been moved from the second to the first Friday this month. In addition to watching the chalk pieces develop during the day and viewing completed works during the gallery walk, the public is invited to an informal “family free draw” at Pulaski Park from 4 to 6 p.m., with chalk provided to all wishing to participate.
Artists selected to compete include former festival prize winners Stephanie Gerolimatos of Holyoke and Smith College student Aida Aiyi Zhang; partners Scot Padget and Jon Hanna from The Living Art Studio; mosaic master Robert Markey; Clara Flynn of Northampton; Jennifer Gutterman of Easthampton; Aaron Harris of Springfield; Dean McKeever of East Longmeadow; Amy “BannerQueen” Johnquest of Holyoke; and Rochelle Shicoff, one of the original “Hestia Mural” artists.
