A Look Back

∎ A truck driver had to hole up in this city for a time last night when holding devices loosened, causing six vehicles on his special vehicle carrier to bang against each other. The unidentified driver stopped in front of Northampton National Bank, effected repairs, and continued on his way.

∎ Plans for a proposed community center jointly housing the YMCA and People’s Institute have been abandoned. After more than two years of study by the boards of directors of both institutions, disadvantages of the merged facilities in the form of legal snags have been determined to outweigh the many favorable factors.

∎ The Northampton School Committee yesterday worked on a list of qualities desired in a new superintendent, including strong leadership and a positive outlook toward the cultural diversity here. Taking the entire day to discuss nothing but the new superintendent gave school board members a sense that they share many feelings, several said today.

∎ Area lawyers will visit local classrooms this week to talk to students about issues ranging from student rights and individual liberties to law theory and constitutional issues as part of the annual “Law Day” celebration.

∎ It appears that Ron Hall, dubbed the “Voice of Northampton” is no longer on the radio. Hall, who has worked as a daily anchor and reporter at WHMP-AM 1400 for more than 43 years, has not been heard on the airwaves since Monday. Station officials refuse to discuss Hall’s status.

∎ Tom Gerety, departing president of Amherst College, will become executive director of the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law. Gerety’s appointment, which was announced by NYU on Thursday, takes effect later this year.
