50 Years Ago

∎ There will be roller skating tomorrow evening in the gymnasium of the Community YMCA, with boys and girls in Grades 3 through 5 roller skating from 7 to 8:25, followed by young people in Grades 6 through 8 from 8:30 until 10.

∎ The Shirts ‘n’ Skits Square Dance Club will hold a picnic Saturday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Abner Adams of 360 Florence Road.

∎ A Northampton schoolteacher has been appointed to a five-year term on the Northampton Housing Authority. Mayor David B. Musante Jr. last week appointed Ricardo S. Barrientos, a teacher and bilingual education program coordinator for the Northampton school system.

∎ After 33 years as assistant city engineer, Francis K. Sheehan has been demoted because the city now claims he is not qualified. Sheehan, 59, who had been an assistant city engineer since 1955, recently received a letter from the city informing him he is being demoted two grades because he had not taken the proper tests to qualify for the position.

∎ Students who meet local graduation requirements but don’t pass the MCAS exam cannot qualify for federal financial aid, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Education Secretary Rod Paige rejected the state’s request for eligibility, leaving as many as 2,000 community college-bound high school seniors on their own to pay tuition and fees.

∎ The Northampton Board of Health has proposed changing from a sticker to a bag system for dropping trash at the landfill and recycling center, in an effort to increase recycling and make sure people pay the right fee for what they dump.
