Work to begin on I-91 resurfacing in Northampton
NORTHAMPTON — Lane closings are expected on Interstate 91 in Northampton after peak commuter hours this week in preparation for a larger resurfacing project.
Work this week will involve installing signs and other preparation for a milling and repaving operation that will be completed in late summer.
“If traffic backs up, we are able to reopen the lane and allow the traffic congestion to ease,” Sara Lavoie, a MassDOT spokeswoman, told the Gazette in an email in response to questions about the project.
Milling is tentatively scheduled for next week, and will be done at night. The work on 1-91 in Easthampton and Northampton consists of what Lavoie termed “micro” milling to remove pavement rutting in both the northbound and southbound travel lanes.

In other MassHighway work, a paving project will target a section of South Main Street in Athol. In Chicopee, work will be done to mill and pave a section of southbound travel lanes from the West Street intersection to the Interstate 391 on-ramp.
