Hampshire Regional YMCA boys 11-12 swim team wins New England championship
The Hampshire Regional YMCA 11- to 12-year-old boys swim team took home the New England championship Sunday.
The team scored 210 points at Springfield College to edge Hockomock Area YMCA (205) for the crown.
Nick Whitcomb took home two first-place finishes for Hampshire. Whitcomb won the 50-yard backstroke in 29.62 seconds and won the 100 back in 1:04.35.
Whitcomb also swam the opening leg of the 200 medley relay, which earned a tight victory over Hockomock, 2:03.65 to 2:04.12.
Quinn Nortonsmith, Avery Cirincione-Lynch and Andy Paul also swam on the relay.
Paul took home three second-place finishes. He placed second in the 100 free in 55.76 to Dan Walsh (55.32) of Waterbury. Paul (32.87) was also runner-up to Jack Benavides (32.07) of Westerly-Pawcatuck in the 50 breast. He placed second in 26.32 seconds in the 50 free to Nathan McClure (26.02) of Holyoke YMCA.
The 200 free relay of Whitcomb, Cirincione-Lynch, Nortonsmith and Paul finished second in 1:50.20 to Hockomock (1:50.00).
Greater Holyoke YMCA placed second with 173 points to YMCA of Northshore (424) Saturday at Springfield College.
Erin Voss of Northampton was second (1:00.54) for Holyoke in the 100 fly.
Kristyn Popowski, who swims for Holyoke Catholic High School, won the 500 free for Holyoke in 5:13.91.
Greater Holyoke won the championship with 339 points Saturday. Westfield YMCA was second with 263.
Holyoke’s 200 medley relay of Colleen Humel, Meriza Werenski (South Hadley), Delaney Dyjak (Holyoke Catholic) and Jessica Harper (Easthampton) won in 1:51.98. The group also won the 400 free in 3:46.28.
Harper won the 500 free in 5:11.06 and was second in the 100 free in 54.56.
Werenski won the 200 IM in 2:14.40, won the 100 breast in 1:09.34 and was second in the 200 free in 1:59.62.
Dyjak won the 50 free in 25.10.
Maela Whitcomb of Hampshire YMCA was third in the 100 back (1:01.27) and third in the 500 free (5:17.89).
Greater Holyoke placed second with 212 points to YMCA of Northshore (274) Saturday.
Ciaran Dillon-Davidson of Amherst won the 100 fly in 53.74 for Holyoke.
The relay team of Aidan Winn (Northampton), Tim Kwarcinski, Dillon-Davidson and Ryan Manniello (South Hadley) was third in the 200 medley (1:46.00) and third in the 400 free (3:29.62.
