Tekeyus Sumpter held after alleged police melee in Northampton

Tekeyus J. Sumpter, 40, of whose address is listed as the Interfaith Cot Shelter, 43 Center St., pleaded not guilty in Northampton District Court to misdemeanor breaking and entering, disorderly conduct (subsequent offense), resisting arrest, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (shod foot) and five counts of assault and battery of a police officer.

Judge W. Michael Goggins ordered Sumpter held on $1,000 cash bail or $10,000 surety.

Sumpter allegedly forced his way in to the shelter about 6:15 p.m. Friday and attacked officers who were called to try to remove him.

Seven officers were called to try to place Sumpter in to custody, and four were injured, according to police.

All of the injured officers are back on the job, Northampton Police Captain Scott A. Savino said Wednesday morning.

Sumpter is due back in court April 18 for a pre-trial hearing.
