50 Years Ago

∎ Sean M. Dunphy of Northampton is serving as secretary-treasurer of the Young Democrats Day committee. Young Democrats Day will be held at the Meadows in Framingham on Saturday.

∎ Miss Frances V. Shaughnessy of Northampton, a senior, has been chosen Student Nurse of the Year by Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Springfield. Miss Shaughnessy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Shaughnessy of 27 Brewster Ct., will be the Mercy Hospital representative in the Student Nurse of the Year competition in April.

∎ Two deer crashed through the front windows of the Big Y Supermarket in the Hamp Plaza yesterday only a few hours before the store opened for business. No one was injured but, because of severe cuts from the broken glass, both animals had to be destroyed by police.

∎ A new assistant district attorney joined the staff at the Northwestern district attorney’s office at a swearing-in ceremony held today. Attorney Elaine L. Contant of Florence was sworn in this morning by Clerk of Courts Norma June Thibodo.

∎ Jere I. Hochman, current superintendent of schools for the Parkway School District in Chesterfield, Mo., was selected Tuesday night to head the Amherst-Pelham Regional School District. Hochman, 50, accepted the offer Tuesday night.

∎ The Three-County Fair Association and city officials are considering a proposal to host the popular rock bands Staind and Godsmack at the fairgrounds for a June 21 concert that could attract an audience of 10,000.
