Northampton School Committee elects Edward Zuchowski vice chairman
The city School Committee has a new leader.
At a meeting earlier this month, members elected Edward Zuchowski, a veteran of five years on the committee, to be the board’s second in command. He replaces Stephanie Pick, who has served for a dozen years on the committee — the past three as vice chairwoman.
Under terms of the city charter, Mayor David J. Narkewicz chairs the School Committee and, as of this year, appoints all subcommittee members. The vice chairman functions as the board’s key spokesperson.
At this month’s meeting, School Committee members and administrators praised Pick’s leadership in that role.
“I think you’ve done a great job,” said committee member Blue DuVal.
Superintendent Brian Salzer, in a recent blog post announcing the change, said Pick “consistently demonstrates a passionate commitment to our students, teachers, and administrators.”
Zuchowski, a graduate of the Northampton schools, is a world languages teacher at Easthampton High School and coach of the EHS varsity baseball team. He heads the Northampton School Committee’s Budget and Property subcommittee.
In a move she stressed was unrelated to the vote for vice chair, Pick announced she will not be seeking re-election to her school board seat in Ward 5.
“I started on the School Committee when my daughter was in kindergarten and now she’s in high school,” she said. “Being on the committee is a huge commitment but it’s the most wonderful commitment you can make. I’m giving people notice now in Ward 5.”
