One-quarter of Southampton remains without power after drenching rain, high winds

NORTHAMPTON — The Western Massachusetts Electric Co. reports that 580 of its power customers in Southampton were without power after lines were downed at 8:17 a.m., 23 percent of all in that community. WMECO Spokesperson Priscilla Ress said power was restored there at 9:35 a.m.

Southampton and Easthampton were among the western Massachusetts communities most affected this morning after winds and rain overnight brought lines down across the region and cut power. “All the damage was tree-related,” Ress said.

In Easthampton, 710 customers lost power at 5:46 a.m. when lines came down in the area of Line and Phelps street and Gunn Road. Power was restored incrementally, Ress said, with the last 28 customers getting power at 9:55 a.m.

At the peak of outages at 7 a.m., 3,420 customers in the WMECO coverage area in western Massachusetts were without power. Scattered power losses were reported in Whately, Amherst and Pelham.

The National Weather Service had a flood warning in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday and a wind advisory until 6 p.m. Winds were expected to lessen this afternoon, but gusts of up to 50 mph are possible, the service said.

Scattered showers are in the forecast today, with cloudy skies predicted Friday and a high temperature of around 32 degrees.
