Members named to study committee on later Northampton High School start ime

Mayor David J. Narkewicz has appointed members of a new committee charged with looking into how to implement a later start time at Northampton High School.

The eight-member group, which held its first meeting Wednesday, has been asked to explore how a later school bell will affect budgets, transportation, sports, after-school activities, and school start and end times at other city schools.

Narkewicz and Superintendent Brian Salzer reviewed letters of interest from community members who volunteered to serve on the subcommittee.

Those appointed to the group are: School Committee members Blue DuVal and Howard Moore; community member Bess Detmold; NHS students Ezekiel Baskin, 10th grade, and Johanna Renard, 12th grade; former School Committee member Lucy Hartry; parent Harvey Hill; and business owner and later-start advocate Steve Herrell.

The group has been charged with submitting a report and at least one later start time proposal to the School Committee by a target date of April 1.

The new panel is the second such group school leaders have formed since the debate over a later school bell at NHS began five years ago.

The first committee recommended moving the high school start time from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. or later, based on studies showing that teens who get more sleep experience less stress and do better in school.
