50 Years Ago
∎ A public auction on Feb. 8 will see Rahar’s Inn, an old landmark and traditional haunt of generations of college students, change hands. The veranda of Rahar’s Inn was the favorite spot of Amherst College men in the first part of the 19th century. Here they joined in some pretty close harmony on spring and fall evenings and their music was a delight to Northampton residents who gathered in crowds along the sidewalks to listen.
∎ Kimball & Cary have been granted a permit to alter a brick building on Hampton Avenue into an office building at an estimated cost of $10,500. Building Inspector Warren Sullivan states that the altered building will face Brewster Court, and that some section of the structure on the Hampton Avenue side will be torn down.

∎ Not wanting to lose momentum in its desegregation plan, the Northampton School Committee has voted to hire a consultant to begin planning for the desegregation plan rather than wait for state funds to hire a full-time desegregation coordinator. The committee hired Jack Giordano, the consultant already hired to train city and school employees to be more aware of cultural diversity.
∎ The Jesse Jackson campaign headquarters, opened recently at 225 Main St., has already been vandalized twice and police said a suspect has confessed. Someone recently carved the initials KKK (Ku Klux Klan) into a Jesse Jackson campaign sticker on the glass-front door.

∎ A nearly 3-year-old restaurant located within a 1940s-style diner at Campus Shopping Plaza in Hadley has unexpectedly closed its doors, leaving behind mystified customers and no clue as to its owners’ whereabouts. The Sit Down Diner, which opened in the spring of 2000, has been shut down for at least two weeks.
∎ Northampton High School Principal Beth Singer is launching a series of regular meetings with parents called “Chat With the Principal.” “I see a need for multiple ways of communicating,” said Singer, who has also instituted a parent newsletter since she was hired last year.
