Two shoplifting suspects caught after police chase in Northampton

Police Lt. Jody Kasper said Northampton police were enroute to Wal-mart on King Street Friday after a store employee reported two males had shoplifted merchandise there and left.

As they approached the store, police officers noticed two males matching the description broadcast about the Wal-mart shoplifters walking on Cooke Avenue. When the officers slowed their cruiser, the two suspects sprinted away, police say.

A foot chase ensued along Bridge and Gleason roads before the two were nabbed and discovered carrying merchandise from the Big Y supermarket, also on King Street.

“The store didn’t even realize it had been robbed,” Kasper said. “It was kind of random and bizarre.”

While police officers chased the suspects on foot, another cruiser responded to Wal-mart and discovered that the shoplifting suspects there were still in the store. Those suspects were questioned by police, but were not arrested and the incident is still under investigation, Kasper said.

Police have charged Carlos Colon of Leeds, 17, and Joshua Cruz, 21, of Amherst, with one count each of shoplifting by concealment from the supermarket.
