WELLNESS FOR FARMERS
To help farmers and others make the most of the winter’s downtime, Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture is offering a workshop on “Staying Strong in the Off-Season,” today, 5:30 to 8 p.m., at the Northampton Friends Meetinghouse at 43 Center St. in Northampton.
Lydia Irons, owner of The Flexible Farmer of Hadley, will teach farmers and others the basics of anatomy, quick and effective strengthening exercises, and techniques for injury recovery. The workshop will also cover ways to protect one’s body from injury during winter tasks like heavy shoveling or when easing back into heavy farm work come spring.

McGannon Fitness in Southampton will hold a new Restorative Yoga series to help relieve holiday stress. Classes include gentle stretch, restful yoga poses, relaxing breathing skills and soothing visualizations. Participants learn skills to use outside of class. EMERGENCY AND TRAUMA CENTER AT BAYSTATE
Baystate Medical Center has opened it s new $45 million Emergency and Trauma Center.
The new facility, which includes separate adult and pediatric care areas, state-of-the-art trauma and imaging rooms, and a secure space dedicated to behavioral-health care, receive its first patients this week.
“The community asked, and we listened: It was time,” said Mark R. Tolosky, president and CEO of Baystate Health, referring to Baystate’s decision to expedite construction. “This has been a period of amazing transformation — a giant step forward, not only for our facilities and our physical plant, but also for our organization, and the fulfillment of our mission.”
Baystate Medical Center, the region’s only Level 1 trauma center and only pediatric trauma center, maintains advanced specialized services — including neurosurgery, pediatric surgery, orthopedic surgery, anesthesiology, intensive care and radiology around the clock, 365 days a year. A newly constructed rooftop helipad will offer air-ambulance crews direct, enclosed access to the trauma rooms.
