Atwood professional building in Northampton marks opening Friday

After 11 months of construction and a 10-year effort to develop the site, the first of two buildings in one of the city’s more significant development projects is now complete. Located at 8 Atwood Drive near the Clarion Hotel, the 40,000-square-foot, three-story Northampton/I-91 Professional Center houses office space for medical and professional use.
“It’s a gorgeous brick-and-glass structure with many green and energy-efficient features,” said Travis P. Ward, operations manager at Agawam-based Development Associates, which developed and managed the building project. “We’re very proud to bring something of this scope to the area.”
Tenants have already leased 92 percent of the space in the building, although 2,500 square feet of space is still available.
The official opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the building takes place Friday from noon to 1 p.m. The event, which is open to all, will present information about the project, as well as provide details for prospective tenants. Tours of the building will be offered, including the space now occupied by the building’s two tenants, Cooley Dickinson Hospital and Clinical and Support Options Inc., both of which have begun construction within their leased spaces.
The event will also feature several speakers, including Northampton Mayor David Narkewicz, Development Associates General Manager Ken Vincunas and Clinical and Support Options Inc. CEO Karin Jeffers. Attendees will include local, state as well as federal dignitaries and members of the Chamber of Commerce. Lunch will be provided.
Construction on a second building is already under way, said Ward, with plans to finish construction in late summer. Cooley Dickinson has already leased 86 percent of the office space in that building, said Ward.
The entire project is estimated to cost $12 million, he said.
