MANNA to serve up Thanksgiving dinner to needy, homebound
NORTHAMPTON — As it has for the past six years, the Manna Soup Kitchen in Northampton will serve up a free, fresh-cooked dinner for those in need on Thanksgiving, on Nov. 22 . A Community Dinner will take place from noon through 2 p.m. at the Edwards Church on Main Street and meal deliveries for people who are homebound in Northampton, Florence, Leeds, Easthampton, Williamsburg and Hatfield will go out from 10 to 11 am.
Home-delivered dinners must be ordered in advance. To place an order, call 582-1312 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday between 4 and 8 p.m. for the week of Nov. 12 and Monday and Tuesday of the following week. For those calls that are not answered, people should leave the following information on the phone message machine: name, street address, city or town, number of meals, their choice of ham or turkey, and a phone number to confirm the order.
The deadline for ordering is Nov. 20.
Many volunteer drivers are needed to deliver dinners on Thanksgiving Day. Volunteer drivers should come to the side door — the State Street entrance — of Edwards Church between 10 and 11 Thanksgiving morning.
To help prepare the meal, set up the dining hall, or serve the community dinner, volunteers can sign up at the Manna Thanksgiving website at www.SignUpGenius.com/go/508084AACAE2FA57-thanksgiving. There, volunteers can select when and how they would like to help out.
Organizers say they are initiating this approach to give everyone who wants to help a fair chance to do so and to better handle all the offers to volunteer that they receive. If you have trouble signing up at the online site, call 268-7896.
Thanksgiving Dinner will be served from noon until 2 p.m. — or as long as the food lasts — in the downstairs fellowship hall at Edwards Church. All are welcome.
This year Manna has already served over 10,000 free meals including a hot supper every Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. and a lunch on Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., both at Edwards Church, and a hot dinner Mondays from noon to 1 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church.
Donations of turkeys (14 to 16 pounds) or spiral hams can be dropped off at regular Manna meals.
