NORTHAMPTON — A man suffered a serious head injury when he was struck by a pickup truck on New South Street just before 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Northampton Police Sgt. Robert Powers said the man was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield but he did not know his condition. He declined to name the victim and said he did not know the driver’s name.

Powers said the pedestrian was crossing New South Street in the crosswalk by the west entrance of Pulaski Park when he was struck by a truck traveling toward the center of town. The truck was in the lane that is for drivers making a right turn onto Main Street.

Powers said the Northampton and State Police accident reconstruction teams were still on scene, and the driver and witnesses were taken to the police station for questioning following the accident.

Powers said it was too early to say if charges would be filed in connection with the accident.

Police closed the street from Main Street intersection to the intersection with Old South Street while they investigated the accident. The street was reopened about 8 p.m.

About half an hour after the accident, four unattended vehicles were stopped in the road, including a tan truck with damage to the front grill that was stopped in the right lane over the crosswalk. A pile of clothes lay in the road about 10 feet in front of it.

Parents trick-or-treating with their families hurried their children as they walked by the area.

Powers said police were taking special care in reconstructing the accident because a head injury can be life-threatening. “When you’re dealing with a head injury, we take that very seriously,” he said.
