50 Years Ago

Plans were announced Tuesday evening at the meeting of the Hampshire Hurricanes Model Airplane Club for a construction and beauty contest. The president, Philip MacDonald, stated that the contest is for the construction of a model aircraft that will be a miniature scale model of a real aircraft.

It’s not every day that one is handed a $1,000 bill. But that is what happened recently to Tax Collector Joseph T. Mew. He reports that one taxpayer walked into the office to pay his property tax of more than $1,000. The man peeled off several bills and tossed them across the counter to Mew.

The first known tunnels in the nation, even in the world, designed to provide salamanders with safe passage during their annual spring migrations to breeding grounds, are being installed on Henry Street in Amherst. The two tunnels, which were donated by the ACO Polymer Products company of Ohio, arrived last week.

The 26-bed psychiatric unit proposed by The Cooley Dickinson Hospital ought to be in place by next summer, after approval by the state’s commissioner of the Department of Mental Health, local DMH and hospital officials said.

Local food aficionados who have always turned their noses up at fast food and drive-through service might want to take a second look at the concept when Spoleto’s Express opens next week on King Street. “I think we are pioneering a trend, I don’t think people have done gourmet fast food to go in Northampton before,” said William Collins, Manager of the new eatery at 225 King Street.

Gubernatorial candidates made last-bid efforts to capture votes, crisscrossing Massachusetts on bus tours and campaigning with big names in politics. Locked in a statistical dead heat with one day to go before Tuesday’s elections, Republican Mitt Romney and Democrat Shannon P. O’Brien battled for the undecided voters.
