Plans for second park-and-ride in Northampton move ahead
Bids for construction of the city’s second park-and-ride lot are expected to go out in the next few weeks, with construction of the 75-space lot set to begin next spring.
The state Department of Transportation is funding the construction of the lot at the VA Central Western Massachusetts Healthcare System center in Leeds. The project also calls for a crosswalk and traffic signal to a nearby bike path.
The City Council earlier this month accepted an easement on the property in order to secure a long-term, 75-year lease on the lot.
Planning Director Wayne Feiden said the VA will maintain the parking lot after it’s constructed, and that the traffic signal will eventually be transferred to the city from the VA.
The lot is designed to be a spot for commuters from the Hilltowns to park and then either bike, take a bus or carpool. Feiden anticipates commuters heading to the University of Massachusetts or south to Springfield will utilize the lot. The city’s other park-and-ride is located off Old Ferry Road near Sheldon Field.
