Amherst high school locker rooms to be altered for transgender students

That was among the summer projects described to the Amherst-Pelham Regional joint school committees Tuesday by Ron Bohonowicz, director of facilities and maintenance for the schools.

The middle school already has changing rooms for students to use based on the gender they identify with, said Superintendent Maria Geryk, and the renovations at the high school will be the next step for improved accessibility.

Other work planned includes the paving of the middle school tennis courts and repairs to the roof and ventilation system of the community childcare center on Strong Street in Amherst.

Also, the office of teaching and learning told the committees Tuesday that an additional math course has been added at Amherst Regional Middle School to better comply with state standards. Starting in the fall, a higher-level course called Math 7 Flex will be available for seventh-graders in addition to the traditional Math 7 course. It also recommended that the school begin using textbooks from the “Big Ideas Math” line for grades six and seven to better expose students to advanced concepts that fit the new Math 7 Flex course.

In other business, Michael Morris, director of educator evaluation and data analysis for the district, reported that the superintendent’s evaluation will be presented and voted on at the June 25 School Committee meeting.
