Friday’s high school baseball: Granby comes from behind to beat Pathfinder
Zach Funk’s relief work kept the Granby baseball team close enough to state a come-from-behind 7-6 win Friday at Pathfinder.
Funk entered the game in the second inning with his team trailing 6-3 and the Rams took the lead with four runs in the fourth.
Funk (five strikeouts, one hit, one walk) tossed 51∕3 innings of relief for the Rams (7-3, 5-1 Tri-County).
Shane O’Connor finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Travis Padgett was 2-for-3 and scored twice.
Max Humphrey went 1-for-2, drew two walks and scored twice.
Noah Parent and Funk each contributed RBI singles.
Gateway Regional 11, Sci-Tech 4 — Power hitting and power pitching by Curtis Dowers led the Gators (3-5, 3-3 Bi-County) to an easy home victory.
Dowers got Gateway started in the first with a two-run home run and finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs. In a complete-game victory, he allowed just three hits and struck out 11.
Geoff Sobotka launched a three-run homer as part of a two-hit game, while Ethan Gamble added an RBI hit.
Frontier Regional 4, Athol 0 — Ben Ruddock fired a complete-game three-hit shutout for the Red Hawks (6-2, Hampshire) in the home win.
The junior walked only one and struck out seven. He received run support on clutch two-out hits by Sam Tillona (RBI double) in the first and Rylan Baronas (RBI single) in the third.
Ryan Hoar added a pair of hits for Frontier.
St. Mary 4, Smith Academy 0 — The Falcons (10-2, 5-1 Tri-County) doubled the Saints (8-0, 5-0) in the hit column, but couldn’t find a way to score a run on the road.
David Longstreeth struck out seven and allowed four hits in the complete-game loss.
Mike Molloy had two of Smith’s eight hits, while Cameron Woodward added a double.
Ware 9, Holyoke Catholic 8 (8) — The Gaels (1-8, 1-7 Bi-County) lost a two-run lead in the bottom of the seventh and a one-run advantage in the last of the eighth to suffer a tough road defeat.
Jeff Laprade (three hits) singled in two runs to give Catholic its first lead in the seventh. After Ware forced extras, Tom Heavren (three runs) singled in the eighth, stole second and third before coming in on a throwing error.
Three errors in the eighth led to the loss, as Heavren took the loss despite allowing no earned runs, no hits and no walks.
Dorian Guidi (run) and Will Kennedy (RBI double) picked up two hits apiece, while Tim Orzechowski (run, RBI) and Evan Daigle (RBI) added a hit each.
