Thursday’s high schools: Smith Academy baseball team cruises past Westfield Vocational

Three pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Smith Academy baseball team remained perfect with a 10-0 victory over Westfield Vocational on Thursday at Bullens Field.

Mike Molloy pitched the first three innings, allowing two hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

With Molloy not going the required four innings, eighth-grader John Ferrera picked up his first career varsity win by not giving up a hit or a walk and fanning four over 22∕3 innings.

Nick April closed out the final 11∕3 frames by surrendering a pair of hits with two strikeouts.

David Longstreeth had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice for the Falcons (5-0). Jojo Afflitto (RBI, run), Austin Rogers (RBIn run) and Keith Natale (RBI) also picked up two hits apiece.

Everyone in the Smith starting lineup scored at least one run.

Girls lacrosse

South Hadley 18, Westfield 3 — Brooke Marion scored five goals and added two assists as the Tigers (1-3) won their first game of the season in Westfield.

Meg Ginley (assist) had three goals, while Olivia Slysz and Deanna Conti each had two.

Kelly Pouliot (goal, three assists), Maddie Brandts (goal, two assists) and Claudia Menard (goal, two assists) each had multiple points.

Sienna Hebert, Kara Callahan and Gabby Schwalm each had one goal. Tara Brainbridge had two assists.

Beth Hennessy made five saves in the win.

Boys lacrosse

St. John’s (Shrewsbury) 10, South Hadley 8 — Evan Marcus scored three goals with an assist but the Tigers (5-1) lost for the first time in the independent home matchup.

Sam Duda had two goals and an assist for South Hadley, while TJ Fitzell (assist), Ryan Dickinson and Tom Crotty added a tally apiece.

Justin Pontz made 10 saves in goal to help the Tigers mount a comeback attempt after trailing 7-3 at the half.
