Monday’s high schools: Easthampton softball slugs Renaissance

The Easthampton softball team jumped out to a big lead after two innings and cruised to a 17-1 mercy-rule shortened five-inning win over Renaissance in Springfield Monday.

The Eagles (1-0) led 6-0 after two innings.

Caelin Mottor allowed three hits and walked a batter, while striking out seven in four innings to earn the win for Easthampton (1-0, 1-0 Bi-County West).

Haley McFarland (three runs), Rachel Connell (two runs) and Molly Cabana (two runs) each had two hits for the Eagles.

Belchertown 10, Chicopee Comp 0 — Sam Manitsas fired a one-hit shutout as the Orioles (2-0) were victorious in their home opener.

The senior struck out eight and walked just one in the outing.

Mackenzie Yelle went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored for Belchertown. Erin Reed-Coates and Sarah Woodcock each knocked in a pair and scored once, while Erinne Dull scored twice with an RBI.

Boys lacrosse

Northampton 16, Holyoke Catholic 1 — Alex Zadworny and Ben Davis each had four goals and two assists, while Cody Malone scored twice and set up seven others as the Blue Devils (1-0) rolled on the road in the season opener for both teams.

Will Lombardi (two goals) and Peter Higgins (goal, assist) also had multiple points, while Michael Rodriguez, Andrew Fleming and Jared Yarde each added a single goal in front of Tyler Walsh (four saves).

Westfield 13, Belchertown 2 — Matt Parent and Jordan Auffrey each scored a goal in the road loss for the Orioles (0-1) in their season opener.

Austin Duhaime had an assist for Belchertown, while Travis Greeley made 10 saves in goal.

Girls lacrosse

Minnechaug 16, Northampton 5 — Molly King scored a goal with an assist as the Blue Devils (1-1, 0-1 Valley Wheel) dropped one on the road.

Emily Poehlein, Kerry Fleming, Emily Allcroft and Shannon Keefe each had a goal for Hamp, while Emily Biggs picked up an assist.

Bridget Harrington and Dana Dufour combined for seven saves for Hamp.

Boys volleyball

Belchertown 3, Ware 0 — The Orioles (2-0) made it two straight victories to open the season with the home sweep, 25-21, 25-17, 25-20.

Nick Wallace had 12 assists, four kills, three aces and two digs for Belchertown. Jordan Vigneault had seven aces, six digs, three blocks and a pair of kills, while Colter Krzcuik added five kills and five digs in the win.
