Division 4 girls soccer: Holyoke Catholic falls to No. 1 Monson in quarterfinals
The Holyoke Catholic girls soccer team could only hold Monson star Brooke Murphy down for so long.
Following a scoreless first half, Murphy had two goals and one assist to pace the top-seeded Mustangs to a 3-0 victory over Gaels in the Western Massachusetts Division 4 Tournament quarterfinal round in Monson.
“We put one of our best defenders, Mary Roberge, on her in the first half,” Catholic coach Mallary Blair said. “In the second half, they found our weak spot and kept hammering away.”
Monson (15-2-2) will play No. 5 Smith Academy at a time, date and place yet to be determined. Smith beat Mount Everett 2-1.
The eighth-seeded Gaels finished 9-7-4.
Murphy scored eight minutes into the second half, then found Meghan McGuill in the 23rd minute for a 2-0 lead. Murphy scored again in the 37th minute.
“The first one was a letdown because we knew Brooke was the strongest part of their game,” Blair said. “They found our right-side breakdown and it happened twice later on. They have really good crosses and they were able to finish.”
Katie Klejna made eight saves in the loss.
It was the final game for seniors Liz Cavanaugh, Anna DeSimone, Lexi Neffinger, Rita Hannoush and Klejna.
