The two best girls volleyball teams in the Eastern Division showed why on Wednesday evening.

Unfortunately for Frontier Regional, a five-set loss to Minnechaug meant the Red Hawks failed to win their league for the first time since 2003.

The Falcons clinched the title by winning the see-saw affair at home, 25-19, 19-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-11.

Sarah Woodward led the Red Hawks (15-4, 6-2) with 18 kills, nine digs and four aces.

Emily Woodward assisted 35 times and had 13 digs, while Cassidy Ciesluk added 10 kills and nine digs.

Rachel Cialek and Liv McCulloch came off the bench to spark Frontier to the fourth-set victory.

“We’re in the right league now,” coach Sean MacDonald said. “It’s definitely tougher for us, but you should have a five-set match to decide the league title. And matches like these are good both mentally and physically.”

The seeds for the girls volleyball tournaments will be announced Thursday.
