New Holyoke charter school to hold lottery for openings this fall
HOLYOKE — The new Paulo Freire Social Justice Charter School is accepting applications for students in 9th and 10th grade for the coming school year, with a deadline of Aug. 1 for the next scheduled lottery.
The lottery for 145 available student slots will be held Aug. 6 at 5 p.m. at the charter school’s facility at 161 Lower Westfield Road in Holyoke. Applications will be accepted from any state resident but priority will be given to students from Holyoke, Chicopee, Northampton, South Hadley, Westfield and West Springfield.
The new charter school, which is being run by the same people who founded Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter Public School, aims to help students prepare for college and will include learning about Civil Rights and other social justice movements and training in community organizing. The school is named for Brazilian educator and activist Paulo Freire, who died in 1997.
Applications are available online at paulofreirecharterschool.org, or by contacting the school at 230-6214.
