Student representatives will help with a variety of tasks for the organization’s annual contest for high school juniors and seniors, including with weekly rehearsals during the lead-up to the event in November. Volunteer hours may be used for school community service requirements.

The position does not require specific skills, but to be eligible students must be enrolled in 10th or 11th grade as of September at one of the following area schools: Easthampton High, Hampshire Regional, Smith Vocational, Holyoke Catholic, Williston Northampton or Pioneer Valley Performing Arts.

Student representatives must also be available on Friday nights from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. from Oct. 4 through Nov. 22 and on the weekend of Nov. 23 and 24. Students must also have their own transportation to contest rehearsals at White Brook Middle School.

The deadline to submit letters of recommendation from a teacher or school staff member is June 28. Letters should be sent to: Distinguished Young Women of Greater Easthampton, P.O. Box 475, Easthampton, MA 01027. Students should include their name, address and phone number.

Distinguished Young Women, which bills itself as the largest and oldest national scholarship program for high school girls, was founded in 1958 in Alabama. In addition to cash scholarships, contest participants are eligible for scholarships from 200 colleges and universities.

For more information about Easthampton’s chapter, contact Jennifer Lawton, the organization’s chairwoman, at 388-5566 or easthampton@distinguishedyw.org.
