Division 4 girls soccer: Smith Academy beats Mount Everett 2-1 to advance to second straight semifinal

For the second straight season, the Smith Academy girls soccer team is one away from its first chance at a championship.

The fifth-seeded Falcons beat No. 4 Mount Everett 2-1 Tuesday in a Western Massachusetts Division 4 Tournament quarterfinal in Sheffield.

“We did a really nice job of being prepared to play,” Smith coach Matt McCloghry said. “I’m really proud of these girls. They worked their tails off.”

Smith Academy (13-4-2) will play No. 1 Monson (15-2-2) at a time, date and place yet to be determined. The Falcons lost to Gateway in last year’s Division 3 semifinal.

Smith Academy jumped on the Mount Everett (11-6-2) in the first half.

Cassidy Snyder took a corner kick and found Moira Pitrat for the goal in the 19th minute.

“It was nice,” McCloghry said. “It was a set piece. We spent a half hour on that set piece (Monday) and we executed it perfectly.”

Snyder then beat Everett goalie Sam Hoover with a shot from 30 yards that hit the underside of the crossbar and went in. Mia Ellis had the assist.

The Eagles made it interesting in the second half when Brooke Morehouse converted in the first minute. Morehouse took a direct kick from the side of the box 19 yards out and made a perfect shot to beat Smith goalie Brooke Pashak (seven saves).

“We put the pressure back on ourselves,” McCloghry said. “They were doing what they can to give me gray hair.”

The Falcons collected themselves and regrouped for the remaining minutes of the second half.

“I let them work through it and things began to settle down,” McCloghry said. “In the next five or six minutes they had pressure but we weathered the storm and got back into the flow of the game.”

Hannah Rickert and Sabrina Sparda each had chances in the second half to add to Smith’s lead.

Anna Soles and McKenzie Wilson played well on defense in front of Pashak.
